Barbara Haering supports public and private institutions as an independent expert and consultant, specializing in applied research, strategy development and evaluation – mainly in the fields of education, science and innovation, public sector reform and sustainable development. Barbara holds a Doctorate in participatory processes in urban planning and an honorary doctorate of the University of Lausanne.
Barbara chairs the Board of Foundation of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining GICHD and she is a Commissioner for the International Commission on Missing Persons ICMP. Barbara also chairs the Strategic Advisory Board of the University of Geneva. She serves as board member of the Technical University Dresden, the Research and Innovation Board of the Technical University Graz and the national expert group on natural hazards PLANAT.
Barbara has been a long-standing member of the Swiss Parliament, chairing the Committee on Science, Education and Culture as well as the Security Committee and serving as Vice-President to the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE. In this capacity, she chaired and participated in many election observation missions.
